17. DOMINANCE

Regular classes were suspended. The gymnasium held the first-year students and family members that were free. There was a festive atmosphere. Julong sat among the students in his regular sweats. He stood out more than usual because the female students wore chain-mail bikinis like professional soldiers, traditional wear for this event.

Alana was a year ahead of him but sat on the bleachers beside him, a bodyguard. She wore a bikini and a black security armband as well. Her knees pressed together. Red in the face, her breasts were scarcely contained by the steel cups.

It must be an old suit, he guessed.

Occasionally, fighting embarrassment, she’d lean into him to yell a comment over the crowd noise, not at all hesitant about giving him a good view of her cleavage.

I suppose she’s feeling the pressure to compete against all the other girls on campus.

Tara, a fourth-year, was absent, running the security office that morning, controlling the roving details crisscrossing the campus. Hella and Givva were on those details. Like Alana, they wouldn’t be tested until the second-years were called.

The floor of the gym was crafted from a glossy yellow wood with brown stippling. He saw no signs of basketball hoops, volleyball nets, or other such sports equipment. Matted areas of the floor had been laid out to allow five bouts at a time. Teachers were present to act as referees. And there were wandering judges who’d compare notes later. It was not unlike a martial arts competition on Earth.

President Dyss strolled around in a military bikini from her service days, recording scenes for the school vid-site. He could tell the difference because her suit was scarred and repaired, having taken damage in actual combat.

Julong slanted Alana a glance. “Your mom hasn’t posted any more holo-vids of me, has she?”

“It’s hard for her not to. You’re very popular.”

The vid of him shoving away a floater had started his slide into glory. The snake execution had drawn global interest. And yesterday’s training, including him launching a Guardswoman into the air with one kick, sending her sliding across the canvas, had added to his growing fame. Mellory had been a good sport about her sudden notoriety, even though it caused her to be scheduled for a brush up on Guard combat training.

The official Guard position had been that Julong had just gotten lucky. His legions of fans didn’t buy it. In fact, flowers and other gifts had started coming into the Men’s Dorm for him by special delivery. He got them after they’d been examined for explosives and other dangers.

I probably have an official fan club now. I wonder who’s managing it.

Dyss’ recording of his martial arts lecture had caught him using his cuff to project the image of an Asian dragon. The mythical Earth animal started a new craze. It had been adopted by grade schools and even a military unit. The locals had never seen anything so fierce. Dragon illustrations were showing up on street wear now as well.

Alana leaned into him once more.
